 Legacy AF Berkshire
With Weathered rods and handrails

The new Legacy Berkshires are beautiful locos but a couple of things linked them back to the AC Gilbert era. The handrails should be black not silver and the rods were polished chrome looking. I used gunmetal blackener on the handrails

I replaced the rods with a set of Flyer Chief Berk rods that were factory weathered. They were a direct replacment except for the top ends of the ECC rods and drive rods.  I changed those parts out with the Legacy Berks removed rods and painted those parts to match.

Here is the catalog art of the Legacy Berk and you can see how the rods and hand rails look toy like.

For maintainence of the smoke unit and lubrication you will have to remove the boiler shell.

When removing the 4 shell screws be careful not to loose the 4 sets of insulating washers.
These are used to isolate the loco shell from the frame and are very important to keep in use.
I squeeze the top flat washers  a bit to distort them so they will stay on the screws.

Also be careful with the front ladders. They are fragile at their base where they are soldered on to the pilot assy.

Here are the part numbers of the replacement rods.
